BUPA (British United Provident Association) is a "not for profit" organisation and is currently the biggest provider of private health insurance in the UK with more than 3 million customers.
BUPA began in the 1940’s, just before the emergence of the National Health Service, as an additional benefit for those looking to have more of a say in where and by whom they were being medically treated. BUPA initiated the Nuffield Hospitals as a charitable trust and in the 1970’s continued its commitment to preventative care by launching a screening centre.
During the 1980’s BUPA began to take part in joint ventures with the NHS and it went on to open its first care home at about the same time. BUPA offers its customers a comprehensive choice of private medical insurance (PMI) plans from their highest level to the more budget fourth level plan.
BUPA's private health insurance customers also benefit from access to specialist cancer nurses as well as treatments, through their unique network of specialist cancer centres. BUPA customers can also have access to breakthrough cancer drugs and often, care in your own home. BUPA customers have access to 35,000 experienced consultants across the UK. BUPA’s simple claims procedure means that most can be authorised over the telephone after an advanced call to let them know what’s going on. Hospital fees are usually paid before you even see the bill.
